While you may think all skin can be treated equally, there are actually ingredients that may be more or less beneficial to your unique skin type. Everyone has a specific skin type that requires its own, unique regimine to make it as happy and healthy as possible.

There are 4 primary features that can categorize our skin and 3 secondary features. When you fully understand your skin type, you can begin choosing products that cater to the specific needs of your skin type.

If you’re wondering HOW you can understand what your skin needs, we’ve provided a guide that walks you through the primary and secondary skin type characteristics so you can fully understand your skin!

Note: Not every skin type has a primary AND secondary characteristic. It is possible to only relate to one primary feature for skin types without having a secondary feature.

Primary Feature

  • Normal

HOW TO TELL | If you are a Normal Skin Type, your skin may not be flawless 100% of the time, but the majority of your days are void of breakouts, dryness, and oil spells. You can handle weather and hormonal changes seamlessly.

SKIN CARE ROUTINE | A Normal skin care routine is more about maintenance than anything else. A gentle routine that helps you to keep your pores unclogged and your skin well hydrated. A simple daily wash, tone, and moisturize will help you to maintain more of those acne free, well hydrated days.

Suggested Product: Try our Whipped Soap Sugar Scrub to keep your skin happy and healthy!

  • Oily

HOW TO TELL | If you are an Oily Skin Type, you may find that you have a regular level of glow to your skin. Make-up may not stay on as long as you’d like and you may find yourself blotting a bit throughout the day. Lucky for you, wrinkles will definitely stay at bay longer than most!

SKIN CARE ROUTINE | The tricky thing about oily skin is you still need to moisturize! Just avoid oil based moisturizers. Over washing could also lead to an excess of oil production on your skin. Your routine is best if it’s minimal and gentle. The top priority should be keeping pores unclogged without over hydrating or over washing. Look for hydrating soaps and oil-free moisturizers.

Suggested Product: Try our Green Tea & Honey Soap. A Hydrating bar made with some of the best ingredients for oily skin!

  • Dry

HOW TO TELL | If you are a Dry Skin Type, you are likely to have a few dry/itchy patches on your skin. You may not break out as much, but you may have some red spots here and there.

SKIN CARE ROUTINE | The most important part of your skin care routine is actually just hydrating your body. Drink plenty of water throughout the day. As for caring for your skin, try using a heavy duty moisturizer throughout the day, especially after washing your skin.

Suggested Product: Try our Triple Butter Lotion Bar. We have unscented for sensitive skin and the Lavender Dream is perfect for incorporating into your nighttime routine.

  • Combination

HOW TO TELL | If you are a Combination Skin Type, you may have trouble determining which skin type you fall into on this list. If you have oily spots (specifically in the t-zone) as well as dry spots throughout your face, you may have combination skin.

SKIN CARE ROUTINE | Your routine will be more of a balancing act. Try implementing toners and spot treatment and avoid harsh products the dry out your skin.

Suggested Product: Try our Lemongrass Soap. A Hydrating bar made with lemongrass essential oil which is perfect for balancing combination skin!

Secondary Features

Once you’ve determined your primary skin type, you can see if you also identify with a secondary skin type to create a well rounded routine that helps soothe and prevent any challenges your skin may face.

  • Acne-Prone

HOW TO TELL | You have breakout that just never seem to end. Your skin could be dry, oily, or combination and still you just can’t seem to avoid clogged pores.

SKIN CARE ROUTINE | While you may have the urge to attack your face with every tool in your toolbelt, acne-prone skin should be treated gently. Using cleansers that are pore-clearing and gentle on the skin and moisturizers that don’t glod your pores is the best defense.

Suggested Product: Try our Charcoal Soap. A Hydrating bar made with charcoal - one of the best natural cleansers!

  • Sensitive

HOW TO TELL | Similar to dry skin, sensitive skin types are quick to flush, turn red or blotchy, or generally react negatively to new products. If you find that your skin is not fond of weather changes, fragrances, or certain fibers, you may have sensitive skin.

SKIN CARE ROUTINE | When choosing products for your routine, ingredients are going to be very important to look out for. Typically fragrances or harsh products could cause a flair up. Try to find gentle, natural ingredients and use as many fragrance free products as possible.

Note: Fragrance additives can be different than natural scents. Look for products that are naturally scented with essential oils or herbs. Just be sure to test on a small patch of your skin before going all out.

Suggested Product: Try our Triple Butter Lotion Bar for a completely fragrance free option.

  • Mature

HOW TO TELL | At some point we will all have mature skin. The common signs are wrinkles, a bit more dryness than before, and a bit of sagging or dark spots.

SKIN CARE ROUTINE | The first step is to be a bit more careful with sun exposure and heat. You’ll also want to make sure you’re moisturizing your face daily while incorporating a face massage into your routine to naturally stimulate collagen release.

Suggested Product: Try our Face Cream! A hydrating cream that uses all natural ingredients!
